Murcia is a coastal province in the east of Spain, consolidated as a region as an autonomous region. It borders with Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha and the Valencian Community. It´s capital Murcia has a population of 400,000 inhabitants. Murcia is a city found in the east of Spain, just south of Alicante and north of Almería. It also borders the two provinces of Albacete and Granada. Today, Murcia is the seventh largest Spanish city with regards number of inhabitants, which currently number 400,000 according to the municipal census.
Murcia covers an area of approximately 881,860 km2, and it´s worth mentioning that the municipality is divided east from west by mountain ranges including Carrascoy, el Puerto, Villares, Columbares, Altaona and Escalano. The eastern side of the province is known as the Campo de Murcia, and the other side is known as the Huerta (orchard).
When it comes to beaches, Murcia city itself has no beach, but within the municipality as a whole there are very popular beaches such as San Pedro de Pinatar, and La Manga de Mar Menor. This is one of the most developed Spanish coastlines, and has numerous hotels, hostals, aparthotels, touristic apartments, houses and chalets.
Murcias city has more than 50 districts such as Albatalía, Alberca, Barqueros, Carrascoy, El Esparragal, La Ñora, Rincón de Seca, San Ginés, Sangonera la Seca, Sucina and Zeneta, among others.
The climate, which tends to be temperate, makes it feel like it is always spring in Murcia. The average yearly temperature is 18ºC. Rain is scarse and irregular, and as a result water is considered a precious commodity by the people of the zone, which has led to the creation of a complicated network of canals and lesser waterways which distribute the water of river Segura throughout the horticultural land of the region.
There are many leisure options in Murcia. It is a university town and therefore has a young, lively atmosphere, and bars, restaurants, cinemas and theatres proliferate.
Culturally Murcia is rich in legacies of the Muslim era, as well as renaissance, baroque and contemporary art treasures.
